Mud Run for Breast Cancer
One of the things I have always wanted to do was a Mud Run. In April I found this Mud Run in the Phoenix area. It is a Mud Run for Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer has a special place in my heart because my sister-in-law fought Breast Cancer for 10 years until it took her life in 2011. This sister-in- law has helped me see that you can find joy in any situation. The treatments for cancer were so hard on her body, but there was not a time that I saw her without a smile on her face. When we would talk about how she was doing, she would say "well I'm still here, so that is good". I know that some days she would be in so much pain that it was hard for her to find something good about the day. One thing I knew was that mentally she was strong and she would fight her battle on her knees a lot. She was such a strong woman. She had the most contagious laugh that I loved to hear so much. When she felt good enough she would loose herself in service. She started knitting beanies for cancer patients. She started sending birthday cards to all of our family members. (That is not an easy task when there was over 150 people in our family). She would collect card and not just the pack for $1 you could get, but she would find cute, sweet cards to send to everyone. That task she did was so special to everyone in our family. The kids really loved getting the card and little trinket that she would stash in the card for their birthday. My sister-in-law took her trial in life and made herself better for it. While growing up she would always tell us "If you've Got it flaunt it! This was the logo on our t-shirts. That saying means so much more to me now. It means every woman has something to flaunt. Every woman can show the world what they got. It does not mean dress down to show it, to me it means be proud of who you are and show the world you are amazing. We also put on our shirt #savethetatas and #nosissiesaloud. Save the tatas is what my sister in law would say, do your breast exam, get your mammogram, check for lumps. This is so important. No sissies aloud means you need to be a strong person to deal with cancer. You need to be a strong person to fight for your life. And that is what my sister in law did, she fought for her life. She had a drive to beat cancer. Attitude is everything. Her positive attitude is what kept her moving for 10 years.
This Mug Girl mud run was a challenge but thinking of my sister-in-law it was so fun to know how much she would have laughed at the group I was with. She might not have liked the mud but she would have had a good laugh seeing us do all those obstacles. It you are wanting to do a mud run, I suggest this one. It was fun and entertaining. It proved to me that we need each other. There were times when complete strangers would cheer us on and we would cheer them on. My sister helped me across a beam and then I helped a couple of other ladies across the same beams. It was amazing that just holding someones hand across a beam would give you that much stability. One of the ladies I helped was so surprised that just touching my arm helped stabilize her enough to get across the beam. That is what we need in life is someone to stabilize us to help us get across our trial. My sister- in- law had so many people that helped her, Her husband, her children, my other siblings, her siblings. She was my sister in every way. She was very stabilizing for me in many ways through out my life. Her memory has also helped me in many ways. When I come across a trial in my life I often stop and think what would Nancy do in this situation. She was and is a strength to me in any trial I've had. I love and miss you Nancy!
