Responsibility vs Excuses
A couple of weeks ago I went to a training for school. Like most training's I was afraid I would get nothing out of it. This time though I had Christi coach me through changing my attitude about training's and I was all set to learn. Little did I know that on the second day of training's my life would be changed from one of the speakers. John Izzo author of Stepping Up, How taking Responsibility Changes Everything. I had not read the book, shame on me, but I am reading it now.
The first 2 sentences talk about what I want to talk about today. "Responsibility changes everything. The Moment we decide that we are the ones who are capable of and responsible for changing things everything shifts." He goes on to say "You are responsible for your own happiness, for the success of your relationships, for the morale of your workplace, for the success of the company where you work, and for your life. What's more, you are responsible for poverty, for global warming, for you neighborhood, for your school, and for homeless. Better said, we are all it."
WOW this struck me hard. If the people of our world would take responsibility for everything we would not be in the mess we are in. I don't want to go into what is wrong with our world but I do want us to think about the role we are playing in the world. I'm as much to blame as anyone else. When you have a problem, what is the first thing you do.......Well if so and so would do this it would not be a problem......If my boss would just listen to me and do what I say......If this person would..blah blah blah. We always point the finger at someone else. Have you ever heard the saying If you point one finger at someone else, you have 3 fingers pointing back at you?
So the next time you have a problem Izzo suggests to ask yourself "What have you done to contribute to the problem? Then ask What can I do to change the situation?"
Izzo told about a time he went to talk to a bank that was named the best company to work for in America by Fortune Magazine. He went into talk to the CEO, he asked him what made his bank the best company to work for? He said "It is the power of love." As Izzo was walking around looking and talking to people he heard people talking about 100/0. When he asked the teller what the meaning was, she said "The 100 stands for 100% responsibility.......0% excuses." "You never say this would be a great bank if the CEO did his job, I'd have made the deadline if not for the other departments, I would have a better day if my boss was nicer, or its not my job to take care of that customer. "Everyone has to have 100% responsibility to do your best. "There are no excuses for not giving your best. "
In our world we live in people have 0% responsibility and 100% excuses. My students come to me and say "she did this to me or he did this" I've always stopped them and said I don't want to know what they did I want to know what you did. After I find out what they did I go to the other person and ask what they did. They always say she did this or he did that. I said no I want to know what you did? What did you do in the situation? Think about that for a minute. When you get mad as someone, what are you mad at? Are you really mad at what they did or are you mad at what you did in the situation?
Everything in this training with Izzo was everything I have been learning for the last 5 months with Christy and Chantel. EVERYTHING
After I told Christy about the 100/0 she asked me one simple question If you applied this to your eating how would you implement this new protocol that you have been trying not to do? In April Christy asked me to start writing down my food for the next day and stick to it 100%. For 4 months I would write down my food and sometimes change what I was going to eat but stay under the protocol of no flour and no sugar. I would still eat healthy but I would change a few things because I didn't feel like eating what I said the day before. I was not sticking to my protocol 100% I was making excuses for why that did not sound good. So after I told her about the 100/0 she said how can you implement this to follow my eating plan. I said I would have to show up with 100% following the protocol I set for my self the day before and 0% excuses. Last Monday I started this new plan, it is hard, because my primitive brain wants to be in control and wants to say eat what you want when you want. As long as you don't eat sugar and flour it is not a big deal. What I am learning, it is a big deal! It is a very big deal!
What part of my brain do I want to be in control? The part of my brain that lives on the spur of the moment, or the part of my brain that is in control. Just the other day a friend said I was on a diet, I said no I'm on a life style change. She said what is the difference. Here is the difference A diet is a change in eating for a short period of time, a life style change is learning day by day to be in control of something you have never been in control of. That is what I am doing. I am controlling food instead of food controlling me. I am 100% responsible for what goes in my mouth, I have no excuses for what I choose to eat. Even when everyone around me is eating donuts and just one won't hurt. Now that one will hurt because I just gave into an excuse and now I am not 100/0.
We need everyone in the would to be 100 /0 not 0/100. To me that is the only thing that is going to make our world a better place!
